Opal can't remember much from before she gained consciousness, nothing of importance anyway. She remembers swimming in dense waters, spending time with sea animals, and then being with her now parents!
She knows that since she was little, they were deaf pirates, and they raised her to believe it was some tragic accident that they both managed to survive.
It wasn't!
She grew up speaking as minimally as possible in accordance with her parents' wishes. They drilled into her head that the truth doesn't need a voice, so now she refuses to speak to anyone, regardless of how desperate the situation.
She found some way to have a voice, whether it's a text, a sound, or a horrible game of charades.
They raised her on the sea, so there was never a chance for her to sit down and truly connect with her peers. Her parents believed comfort was the enemy of progress, so they were sure to keep her on the move before she could find comfort.

To make up for her lack of vocal performance, Opal worked hard to be sure her grades never faltered because of it. She received nearly top marks, but never high enough to force her into a situation that would require her to speak.
She learned sword-work from her father and basic housework from her mother, but on her own she dabbled in the arts, especially the art of singing.
One day, it attracted a small squid that insisted on staying with her, so when she was far from home, she would swim and sing with it, especially in the rain.
Her life slowed down as her parents aged, and soon the ship no longer took off when she was used to her surroundings.
One day, the ship was sold, and her parents decided to settle in a small town not far from where she now goes to school.
She still visits them on occasion, being sure to be as silent as possible around them, but now that they are settled, she has the time to find a knack for eavesdropping and a desire for drama.
